Institutional Biosafety Committee

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) at Georgia Southern University provides oversight, guidance, and approval for all research involving biohazardous materials, recombinant DNA, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and other biological hazards. The IBC ensures that research activities are conducted safely, ethically, and in compliance with NIH Guidelines, USDA-APHIS regulations, and federal and state biosafety policies.

The committee works closely with faculty, staff, and students to promote a culture of responsibility in research while protecting the health of personnel, the environment, and the community.

What the IBC Oversees

  • Use of human, animal, or plant pathogens (Risk Group 2–4)
  • Research involving recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules
  • Human and mammalian cell lines, tissues, and blood products
  • Genetically modified plants, animals, and microorganisms
  • Use, storage, and transport of biohazardous materials
  • Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC) requiring additional oversight

IBC Resources and Guidance

The IBC provides detailed guidance and resources for researchers. Use the links below to learn more about requirements, forms, and training:

  • Biosafety Policy & Procedures – Institutional guidelines and compliance expectations for working with biohazards.
  • IBC Application – Application process, deadlines, and submission instructions for new or renewal protocols.
  • Frequently Asked Questions – Answers to common IBC questions, including waste disposal, DURC, and approval requirements.
  • IBC Forms – Access applications, renewals, modifications, termination forms, and safety tools.
  • IBC Training – Required online biosafety training modules, including CITI training, bloodborne pathogens, and hazardous waste awareness.
  • Plant & Genetically Modified Organism Permits – State and federal permit requirements for plant research and GMO projects.
  • Shipping & Transportation – Regulations, training, and documents for shipping and transporting regulated biological materials.

Commitment to Research Safety

Georgia Southern University’s IBC is committed to supporting innovative research while ensuring compliance with biosafety regulations. Researchers are encouraged to contact the IBC office early in project planning to determine requirements for applications, permits, or additional oversight.
